Trabzon is famous for a legendary structure dedicated to the Virgin Mary and built into a sheer rock cliff face. Located in a spectacular national park, the Sumela Monastery enshrines Trabzon's former religious heritage. It is adorned with frescoes, many still quite well preserved. In Trabzon located above the coastal highway, the St. Sophia Church is one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine church design. Its history includes being used as a military headquarters, a hospital, warehouse and mosque. It has been restored and is now open to the public as a museum showcasing an interior lined with detailed frescoes. Set high above the city with a fine view and lovely gardens sits a spectacular summer villa known as Atatürk's Kiosk. This home was constructed for a wealthy Trabzon family between 1890-1903. Later the home was purchased by the municipality of Trabzon and presented to Atatürk as a gift in 1931. The museum displays the home as it once was with period furnishings and Atatürk memorabilia. A charming intimate tea garden on the grounds invites you to enjoy the ambiance. Due to its proximity to the former USSR, Trabzon features its own Russian Bazaar. Mingle among the traders from Russia and other ex-Soviet republics peddling their assorted wares and trinkets. Here you will find items such as Russian dolls and perhaps a tin of Caspian caviar.
